LET IT RIDE – Multi plays with Ryan Phelan

Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.

Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.

Race 1 – 1720m APG Trot

1/1 Hatchback – Ewa Justice/John Justice

Hatchback is a speedy beginner who finally draws to advantage. His recent runs have been fair without much luck, but from the pole he gets his best chance in some time at good odds.

Confidence: Low    Rated Place Price: $3.50

Race 2 – 2240m Hygain Victory Pace

2/2 My Ultimate Barney – Kate Gath/Andy Gath

My Ultimate Barney overdid it chasing the lead last week, but the sectionals were excellent. With a softer run from this draw, he looks ideally placed against this line-up.

Confidence: Medium          Rated Win Price: $1.80

Race 3 – 2240m Nevele R Stud Pace

3/7 Sir Jimmy – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart

Sir Jimmy is a classy 4YO who has been racing exclusively in stronger company. The draw makes things tricky, but his raw ability should take him a long way in this field.

Confidence: Medium    Rated Place Price: $1.40

Race 4 – 1720m Benstud Standardbreds Pace

4/1 Le Belle Bijoux – Ewa Justice/Kari Males

Le Belle Bijoux is a reasonable map bet from the pole. If she can kick up and lead, her toughness makes her a solid value each-way chance.

Confidence: Low          Rated Place Price: $2.60

Race 5 – 1720m Multicam CNC Router Bits Pace

5/3 Curyo Gentleman – Michael Bellman/Rod Carberry

Curyo Gentleman was plain last time as a best bet, but his two prior runs were excellent. He maps to lead again, and the shorter trip suits him perfectly.

Confidence: Medium            Rated Place Price: $2.20

Race 6 – 1720m Hyland Racing Colours Pace

6/4 Ruff Nut – Aaron Dunn/Aaron Dunn

Ruff Nut is airborne, rock-hard fit, and drawn to find the front. Key rivals lack race fitness or are poorly drawn. He looks the Best Bet of the Night and serious overs in the market.

Confidence: High      Rated Win Price: $2.50

Race 7 – 1720m Aldebaran Park Trot

7/4 Meadow Valley Star – Anthony Butt/Brent Lilley

Meadow Valley Star was rewarded for consistency with a good win last start. He’ll push forward again, and while the map isn’t certain, his honesty will carry him a long way.

Confidence: Low    Rated Place Price: $1.50

Race 8 – 1720m IRT Sapling Stakes (2yo C&G)

8/6 Letsstartinheaven – Jason Lee/Emma Stewart

Letsstartinheaven looks the Multi Lock of the Night after smashing a near-identical field last time. The shorter trip plays even more to his strength, and he should lead and dominate again.

Confidence: High    Rated Win Price: $1.10

Race 9 – 1720m Hip Pocket Castlemaine Trotting Mares Free For All

9/7 Jilliby Ballerini – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee

Jilliby Ballerini is the class runner but faces a real test from the wide draw over the sprint trip. Hard to tip against her, but not a betting proposition at the current price.

Confidence: Low    Rated Win Price: $1.70

Master Victorian harness racing reinsman Chris Alford showed he’s still got the magic touch, driving five winners at Cranbourne last night – the 21st time in his career he’s produced such a haul.

The search is on.
With defending champion Swayzee locked in for another tilt at the $250,000 Group 1 Victoria Cup, the drive on recently crowned TAB Eureka winner Bay Of Biscay is up for grabs.
