Significant preparation goes into getting a horse ready for a yearling sale and someone who fully appreciates the level of dedication is Monique Burnett.

Burnett and her team have 32 yearlings making their way to the 2024 Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold Sale at Inglis Sales Complex on February 4.

“I tend to start to get them eight weeks prior to the sale… We work, wash, put away, go to a yard, into a stable. It’s pretty much a racehorse routine, just obviously not as physical,” Burnett told RSN's Cracking The Codes.

“When people notice the effort and how good they actually look, you just literally beam. It pays off, all the hard work. There’s a sense of pride.”

When asked who her favourite yearling was in the bunch, Burnett said she would never pick favourites but there were a few that stood out.

“We have only got two trotters in the whole draft. The colt is a Bold Eagle, and he will be the first one sold down here,” she said.

“We have two Sweet Lous out of the Bronski Gorgeous family, a colt and a filly.

“We have two Capt Midnight fillies, one that is related to Tay Tay. We are lucky, we have a variety of yearlings for every single person.”

The Burnetts are incredibly grateful for the support they have had from their owners after recently rebuilding their barn following a tragic fire that occurred in July 2022.
