Superstar North American trotter On A Streak will make a shock appearance at Tuesday’s Melton trials.
The Haras des Trotteurs stallion, who stood his first season in Australia at New South Wales’ Cobbitty Equine Farm, has impressed enough during his work with trainer Anton Golino to warrant looking at a path towards the races.
“We just had him in work because they do that in France a lot – they just keep them ticking over from a stallion point of view – and he’s been exceptional,” Haras des Trotteurs owner Pat Driscoll said.
“How far it goes, I’m not sure.
“We’ll just pick our way through. I’ll leave it all up to Anton, he can have a look and see what he wants to do.”
Driscoll said the original plan was to race On A Streak when he was purchased, but when a deal to stand the French-bred Eridan fell through, it was decided he would be used for breeding purposes.
The son of Cantab Hall covered in the vicinity of 100 mares during his first season Down Under and might now be set to have an impact on the track here in Australia.
On A Streak was the 2020 Breeders Crown two-year-old male champion and also won the $535,000 William Wellwood before being named Canada’s two-year-old trotting colt of the year.
Tomorrow’s trial will see On A Streak up against stablemate Interview, the Andy Gath-trained Just A Bit Touchy, Chris Svanosio’s recent Warragul Trotters Cup champ Brandlo Prince, Joe Vassallo’s I Am Pegasus and Majestic Chick, who is prepared by Josh Dickie and Sammy Kilgour.
Gath will also have Chariots of Fire and Miracle Mile hero Catch A Wave stepping out at Melton as he prepares for a shot at the $2.1million TAB Eureka in September.
