Bettor Robyn is the only horse from the Luke and Belinda McCarthy team still based at their camp in the Goulburn Valley and she will chase more feature success for the stable this Friday night.
The classy mare is one of many McCarthy runners to have left New South Wales to campaign in Victoria during recent months, with the latest interstate raid headlined by Spirit Of St Louis’ country cups sweep through January.
With her stablemates now back home across the border, Bettor Robyn is the last horse left in the care of Peter and Isabel Walsh, who manage the McCarthy property just behind the Shepparton Harness Racing Club.
The daughter of Bettors Delight is the sole mare in Friday night’s Flying Brick Cider Co. Geelong Rocket field and will start from gate four for the 1609m sprint.
She hasn’t raced since sixth in a hectic Ararat Pacing Cup on February 13, but did impress with a trial victory on her adopted home track last week.
“She trialed nice last week. Nathan Jack drove her and she led and won the trial,” Peter Walsh said.
“She brushed home in a pretty nice last half - I think it was around the 55sec - and she went good. She’s a nice little mare, pretty easy to deal with.”
Walsh said Bettor Robyn had good gate speed, but didn’t believe she had to lead to be able to win.
“Whatever race you’re in you’ve got to respect everyone. She’s drawn the middle of the row - it might suit her, it might not,” he said.
“Her work has been good, her trial was good and she is well in herself.
“You never go (to the races) without thinking you’re a winning chance. You don’t go not to be a winning chance.”
Before the Ararat Pacing Cup, Bettor Robyn was third in the Group 1 Ladyship Cup at Melton behind Spellbound and holds a career record of 11 wins from 46 starts.
Jack will take the drive of the six-year-old before heading to Sydney on Saturday to partner Emma Stewart-trained Mach Dan – a winner of the Geelong Rocket in 2021 – in the re-scheduled $1million Miracle Mile at Menangle.
The Rocket has been won by some stars of the sport, including Shakamaker (2003), Smoken Up (2009 and 2010) and Melpark Major (2012), but was not run after 2013 until returning last year.
The small but quality field on Friday includes Julie Douglas-trained stablemates Bernie Winkle and Ozzie Battler, Its Back In The Day (John Nicholson), Vintage Cheddar (Andy Gath), Bettor Be The Bomb (Basil Dooley) and Bulletproof Boy (Scott Ewen).
A total of 10 races will be run from Geelong, with the night’s TrotsVision coverage hosted by Josh Jenkins, Josh Dickie and Dan Mielicki.
