Syndicate’s first starter looking Mint ahead of Maryborough debut

There will be plenty of hearts in mouths when at a tick after noon today a regally bred first-timer makes her debut in the first at Maryborough.

Alabar Syndicate-owned Momentslikethese is the only debutant in the Central Victoria Fencing 2YO Pace, with the Art Major filly carrying plenty of expectations being out of Mint Julep, which makes her a little half-sister to gifted three-year-old Pacifico Dream.

Alabar General Manager Brett Coffey said he was “hoping for a win, but you can never be too sure about two-year-olds having their first start”.

“She has definite ability,” he said. “She’s had an education (run) and trialled twice. She has raced really well but hasn’t won any.

“(Trainer) Jess (Tubbs) and (reinsman) Greg (Sugars) really like her, which gives you confidence because the stable is flying. We don’t know much about the opposition yet, we will just wait and see how they line-up.”

Momentslikethese was snapped up for $42,000 at the 2019 Australian Pacing Gold sale by the syndicate, which boasts 29 members and two horses, Momentslikethese and Whiskey And Rye.

The latter, a Bettors Delight colt out of Rye Hanover, which makes him a half-brother to Blazin N Cullen ($576,352), has had two starts for Andy Gath that have returned a third and a fifth.

Coffey said Whiskey And Rye had shown some promise and was “learning the trade” and he was “really rapt” that, with today’s debut by Momentslikethese, “both have got racing this early in the season”.

“Both have been really good throughout, we will keep our fingers crossed, but it’s exciting,” he said.

“Most (Syndicate members) have had horses before or been involved in other syndicates, there is one first timer and some haven’t been in horses for quite a while.

“Jess and Greg have been really good in communicating with the syndicate, as has Andy, which is really good. It’s just good to be able to share the experience with all these people.”

And there is good reason for optimism, with GoodForm analyst Blake Redden having the first starter on top.
