A fresh-faced Kiwi arrival is among five additions to Craig Rail's Trial File Blackbook, which has now swelled to a select group of 26 who the master race caller and form analyst has earmarked for future success.

Here's his latest report from the Victorian trials circuit. Scoll to the bottom for his updated Blackbook.

SHEPPARTON 08/10/20

Trial 1: - BREVITY began quickly to lead, used the sprint lane and was able to drive through and score without being fully extended. RETURN SOLDIER was fifth on the markers in the early stages, moved into a one out and one back trail at the 1100m and came out three horses wide approaching the home turn. He finished off well and missed out narrowly. LOUISIANA JO began quickly to lead early, was shuffled back on the markers mid-race (3 back) and produced a nice performance for third. MAJADORE had a brief stint in the one out and one back trail but was without cover for the majority of the journey and finished in fourth position. IDEAL DRAW is a former New Zealander, which has only had the one Australian start at Leeton. He was three back on the markers early, moved away from the inside and dashed to the front with 1700m remaining but tired in fifth late. STARSBYTHEBEACH was four back on the markers before moving into the running lane with 700m remaining (1-2). He finished ahead of SPEAK NO EVIL, which broke in the score up, missing 50m, tacked onto the group at the 1500m but broke stride again at the half mile marker and finished tailed off.

Mile Rate: - 1.59.8          Final Half: - 60.5               Margins: - 1m, 4m

Trial 2: - ALLSET (Elsu – Rosesrredviletsrblue) is a New Zealand bred gelding, which is yet to make his debut. He only scored by a narrow margin but appeared to be quite impressive. He began quickly to lead, took a trail, moved to the death seat at the 900m and raced greenly in the final lap. He seemed to switch off when he hit the front but once TROUBLE LOOMING got alongside of him, he refused to let him pass. He should have improved by the experience. TROUBLE LOOMING ended up being four back on the markers and worked to the line nicely to finish in second position. ALTIMETER raced without cover early, pushed forward to find the lead at the 1500m and faded into third. LIFESINQUESTION (Betterthancheddar – Lifeinthecountry) settled three back on the markers and finished fourth. He backed up to win at Shepparton on Thursday. CRYSTAL FLAME (Courage Under Fire – Crystal Reign 2.3.3, $33,714) trailed the leader early and ended up being three back on the markers, finishing fifth ahead of STEAL SOME TIME (Lombo Pocket Watch – Jillie Scot 2.1.1, $28,428), which was last on the markers for the duration.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.2            Final Half: - 58.2               Margins: - Neck, 15m

He has been having trouble holding a straight course at the trials recently but there is no doubting his ability. DALTON trailed the leader and was dashing through along the sprint lane. He tried hard and missed out narrowly. FRATELLINO settled seventh on the markers, came out three horses wide on the turn and finished on well for third. STICK WITH ME pushed forward to find the lead and was gunned down late. MAJIC FAIR settled sixth on the markers and was held up badly for a run. He went to the line with plenty in reserve and should have finished closer. VIOLETTA GIFT (Andover Hall – Shez Allrighty 2.2.4, $85,431) broke at the start and lost 20m, settled fifth on the markers then broke stride with 150m remaining but she wasn’t competitive at the time. THREE BROS (Dejarmbro – Right Yankee) settled in third position but wanted to hang out and started yielding ground with 600m remaining. ABBIE (Majestic Son – Aldebaran Peggy) broke at the start and was tailed off throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.12.3          Final Half: - 62.7               Margins: - 1m, 3m

Trial 4: - HELIKAON began quickly and got two metres in front but couldn’t cross to the markers then angled in behind the leader. He popped off the inside at the quarter pole and was able to get up and win narrowly. BUNDLE OF NOTES began quickly to lead and set up a slow tempo before holding on in the straight and being beaten narrowly. APHRODISIAC began quickly and angled across to be three back on the markers. He was a distant third ahead of MAIDBETTORFORYOU (Bettors Delight – Maid For You Lombo 2.2.6, $19,115), which settled four back on the markers. PEDRO was fifth on the markers and remained in fifth at the end while SMOOTH TECHY (Shadow Play – Smooth Christian 1.58.1, $64,505) finished a tailed off last after breaking stride on the first turn then again at the 1800m mark.

BUILDER BOB was third on the markers, moved up without cover at the 500m and was able to hit the lead momentarily before being run down over the concluding stages. WILLDOMXAV attempted to lead all of the way but was run down on the home turn. THE RED WARRIOR was slow to move, lost 25m and was last of the four runners throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.9.2            Final Half: - 61.7               Margins: - 1m, 10m

Trial 6: - DYNAMIC LEGACY began quickly to find the lead, backed off the tempo mid-race and was able to hold on and defeat HERES TO YOU JIMMY, which settled three back on the markers and dashed through along the sprint lane. FOXTROT HILL pulled hard in fourth position, moved up without cover at the 600m and ended up being three horses wide on the home turn. He trotted home determinedly and finished a close up third. SO AWESOME trailed the leader and moved up without cover approaching the home turn. He finished fourth and VERRY CHEERFUL galloped away, losing approximately 70m hence came in a long last.

The unraced qualifier ZERO DOUBT (Shadyshark Hanover – Problem Solved 1.59.0, $27,361) was a good margin away in fourth position but was meeting a few handy performers.

Mile Rate: - 2.0.6            Final Half: - 57.5               Margins: - 45m, Head

Trial 3: - TIC TACT hasn’t raced since being unplaced at Terang in June. The former Queenslander has won several trials in Victoria but hasn’t been able to break through at the races as yet. IM JIMMIES GIRL (Shadow Play – Priddy Good 2.0.1, $5,125) was in fourth position after being five back on the markers for most of the trip. CALL ME DOTTIE was on her worst behaviour after galloping early then again on the first corner. MEXICAN STANDOFF (Changeover – Cindy Shiraz) broke stride at the start, was three back on the markers, pulled hard, raced roughly at the 600m and eventually broke stride again at the 300m so he did a bit wrong in the trial and was the last horse to greet the judge.

Mile Rate: - 2.4.2            Final Half: - 61.5               Margins: - Head, 3m

Trial 2: - MIRADERO pulled extremely hard in the score up and also in the initial stages of the event. She found the lead easily, ran along at a genuine tempo and raced to a very comfortable victory. He drew barrier one at Mildura this afternoon and trialled well enough to be competitive but he is taking on a handy field. YA BOWEN DELIGHT began quickly and drew two metres in front early but couldn’t get across and ended up slotting in behind the leader. He finished third with MISS REMBRANDT (3 back markers, without cover 400m, shifted out in straight) being in fourth position.

Mile Rate: - 1.59.9          Final Half: - 59.9               Margins: - 3m, 1m

Trial 2: - IZMOK was last of the four runners early, gained a one out and one back trail at the 500m mark, came out four horses wide on the home turn and proved too strong for KYVALLEY CHIEF, which settled down third before moving away from the markers in the back straight on the final occasion. FORGOT TO REMEMBER finished in third position after trying to lead throughout and YOUR NICKED used the sprint lane after trailing the leader but was the last one to greet the judge.

Mile Rate:  Not Given    Final Half: - Not Given    Margins: Head, 12m (approximately)

Trial 3: - BRUISED EGO showed good gate speed to lead and was able to remain in control of affairs throughout. He appeared to be in danger of defeat turning for home but he kicked on strongly at the end and scored by a little over a length. CAESAR MOON began well and angled onto the back of BRUISED EGO on the first turn. He got up within a half of a length in the home straight before BRUISED EGO kicked clear again near the line. CAESAR MOON backed up at Shepparton on Thursday with an unlucky second where he locked wheels turning for home and lost valuable ground. INAUGURATE was without cover early, gained a one out and one back trail behind CAESAR MOON at the 500m mark and finished in third position. MY SHADY MATE was last of the five competitors (4 back markers) and held his ground in the straight for fourth with SURBITON CHARDONNAY (3 back markers) being the last horse to pass the post.

TELLEMLIES finished in second position after being three back on the markers early, moving into the death seat at the 600m mark and holding on well in the run to the finish. SHARKBITE ALTO found the lead around the first turn and was gunned down in the latter stages. LORIMERLANE led out, took a trail and had every chance in finishing last of the four combatants.

Mile Rate: - Not Given   Final Half: - Not Given    Margins: - 5m, Head (approximately)

Trial 5: - IGNITING STRIDE showed his usual brilliant gate speed to lead, was joined by ROGUE GENTLEMAN approaching the home turn but kicked clear again in the straight to win nicely. ROGUE GENTLEMAN was three back on the markers, moved to the death seat in the back straight and loomed up ominously approaching the home turn. He peaked on his run in the latter stages but he should be fitter from that run. KYVALLEY HOTSPUR was behind the leader throughout and finished in third position with PARIS FAITH being last for the duration after galloping in the score up, losing 20m and breaking stride again on the home turn.

Mile Rate: - Not Given   Final Half: - Not Given    Margins: - 12m, 45m (approximately)

He finished quickly for an eye-catching second and backed that performance up with a Bendigo victory mid-week. MY HONEY DON’T was three back on the markers, circled around the tiring leader at the 600m mark and moved into the trail behind TENLILFONZIES. She was nosed out of second by WHOS COUNTN on the line. TABCORP PARK, MELTON 13/10

Trial 1: - ROSANNA LINDY settled three back on the markers, moved into the death seat at the 600m, dropped in behind for a breather approaching the home turn and popped to the outside again on the corner. She got home best to beat the early leader LEANNE LEEANN but both horses appeared to have plenty in reserve at the finish. ROI DU SOLEIL finished third after being slowly away and settling last of the six runners. He edged to the outside with six hundred metres remaining and kept on chipping away at the finish. CONSTANTINOPLE (Trixton – El Scorcho 2.2.6, $14,255) trailed the leader, lost ground before the home turn and tried to pick up again in the straight. She finished fourth in front of the juvenile trotter MAJESTIC MATADOR (Majestic Son – Auzzie Rose 2.3.2, $29,496), which began slowly and settled four back on the markers. GATESYS GIFT was fifth on the inside, moved away from the markers to make up ground in the back straight but broke stride at the 500m mark and lost all chance.

She was last of the three horses for the majority of the trip before switching back to the sprint lane and firing through to win nicely. There was nothing special about the overall time or sectionals (2.10.2, 64.01, 31.31) but she showed very good acceleration in the latter stages. MONTELENA trailed the leader and her stable mate COTE DE OR (Love You – Donegal Flat) before moving to the outside on the home turn picking up second position. COTE DE OR finished last of the three but it is fair to say none of the trio where fully extended at any stage.

Mile Rate: - 2.10.2          Final Half: - 64.01    Margins: - 5.5m, Head

Trial 4: - MAJOR MEISTER was restrained at the start and settled down last of the six runners. He popped away from the inside to get around two runners, which were struggling to hold their position with 1300m remaining, went to the pegs, got around SCOTTS RAIN, then got back in behind the leader and came to the outside again on the home turn. He dashed to the front in the straight and strolled to victory with plenty in reserve. ROGERVALERIO LOMBO was headed off at the start and trailed the leader. He zipped around to find the lead at the 1500m and ran along at a genuine tempo. He couldn’t withstand the challenge of MAJOR MEISTER but he defeated the remainder of the field comfortably. BETTERTHANFLYHIGH was a bit like MAJOR MEISTER mid-race in the fact he was swerving in and out to get around tiring runners. He finished in third position with SCOTTS RAIN (Big Jim – Roman Jasper) being fourth after showing very good gate speed to lead then taking a trail. THE REGULATOR started off being three back on the markers but was struggling to keep up with the hectic early speed being set. He dropped out to finish fifth with MY LINDY ANGELS being the last of the runners to cross the line after being without cover and galloping with a mile remaining.

MEYDAN (Andover Hall – Showmethemaori) settled last of the four runners, was slightly inconvenienced when BAARLINEE broke stride at the 600m mark and chased hard for a nice second. ARU AND ME finished third after trailing the leader throughout and BAARLINEE’s (Peak DNK – Drop Us Aline 2.0.4, $103,393) (3 back markers) error at the 1500m mark was costly as she finished at the tail of the field.

Mile Rate: - 2.3.4            Final Half: - 60.06    Margins: - 15m, Short ½ Head

Trial 6: - BEEFOUR BACARDI began very fast to lead, started to roll along from the half mile marker and dashed away for a convincing victory. He appears to be a winning chance at Ballarat tonight. He did look to have a fair bit up his sleeve if it was required. ZIGZAGZOO began quickly and found the markers after travelling 100m. He set up a reasonable tempo in the lead and kicked on quite well. ONE OVER DA SON settled three back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail and came out three horses wide at the 300m, running to the line quite well at the finish. OFORTUNA showed good gate speed but elected to take the trail behind ZIGZAGZOO. She went back to the sprint lane in the straight and wasn’t beaten by far despite finishing fourth. FLING ABOUT was four back on the markers throughout and came in last of the five runners.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.7            Final Half: - 57.95    Margins: 2.5m, Head

PHOENIX PRINCE settled last of the three runners, came to the outside at the 400m to chase, got in behind SOMEWHERE SECRET turning for home and ducked back to the sprint lane in the final stages. His run was very good considering the final sectionals. PICK UP LINE appeared to have her chance behind the leader but met two very smart horses on the day.

Mile Rate: - 1.56.5          Final Half: - 55.54    Margins: - 4m, 20m

Trial 9: - KRAFTY BART trailed the leader HARDHITTER, obtained an inside run when that horse travelled awkwardly, galloped and ran off the track at the 300m mark. RAGNARR settled fifth on the inside, gained a one out and back trail at the 400m and battled on fairly well for third position. CROMPTON BAY settled three back on the inside and was left flat footed when the field sprinted up approaching the home turn. He finished fourth and HARDHITTER failed to complete the course.

Mile Rate: - 2.0.6            Final Half: - 57.65    Margins: - Neck, 11.5m

MAKE WAY settled last of the four runners and remained in that position throughout.

Mile Rate: - Not Given   Final Half: - Not Given    Margins: - 5m, 6.5m

SHEPPARTON 13/10

Trial 1: - SPEAK NO EVIL was able to take out the opening trial softly. She settled four back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail at the 1500m and came to the outside approaching the home turn. She seemed to have plenty in reserve and more importantly, did everything right, compared to the trial four days earlier. ROCKINFEELGOOD was eighth on the outside (1-3), gained a run through the middle and finished off strongly for second with DAYLIGHT AT DAWN being third after settling three back on the markers, being held up for a run at a vital stage and diving along the sprint lane in the latter stages. Both horses are contesting the final race at Charlton on Monday and are not without a chance. NOTORIOUS JOE was four back on the markers and pulled hard. He got into the clear late and was picking up some ground at the end. STARSBYTHEBEACH began quickly to lead, took a trail and was held up for a run at a vital stage, coming to the outside on the turn then switching back to the inner late. MANGOCHILILIME showed good gate speed to lead and tired late to finish sixth. HEREHECOMES was last on the outside and beat home CAUSENFRICTION, which was sixth on the markers before moving up without cover at the mile marker and GETBUSYFIZZY (5 back markers, 1-2 at 1500m) was the last one home.

Mile Rate: - 1.59.3          Final Half: - 57.2               Margins: - 8m, Head

Trial 2: - MACH HAMMER dropped back to the tail of the field in the early stages, came to the outside at the half mile marker, made up good ground in the back straight and was out three horses wide from the 500m before launching a winning claim. The time wasn’t fast but he showed he had a bit of class on his rivals. HELENA (Art Major – Birds Can Sing USA 1.57.7, $6,375) began well and progressed forward to lead 300m after the start. She set up a slow tempo and kicked on for second in front of SMOOTH TECHY (Shadow Play – Smooth Christian 1.58.1, $64,505), which moved up without cover from four back on the markers at the 900m mark. MILLY PATONE was three back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail at the 500m and was very wide into the straight. JUKEBOX JET was five back on the markers, was shuffled back to last on the home turn and was the widest runner into the home straight. He powered home into third placing. It may have not been a strong trial and he has been unplaced at big odds at his only two starts to date but that run was extremely eye-catching. CHANGEOVER GIRL (Changeover – Shortys Treasure 1.58.8, $24,110) settled fourth on the markers, pulled hard and used the sprint lane. She ran home well for a nice fourth. ALLVICTORY HANOVER raced sixth on the outside, trailed up perfectly behind the winner and ended up finishing in fifth in front of LIKAVEEEIGHT, which trailed the leader throughout. MELPARK BUTCH was three back on the markers and beat home OVER CHANGE (Changeover – Coiffeuse 1.57.8, $110,460), which was the only horse in the trial that hadn’t started previously and did the most work in the run after being in the death seat throughout.

Trial 4: - CMON CARL LEE stepped away well from the standing start and settled three back on the markers. He moved to the outside at the 800m mark, sprinted quickly and was able to sustain the run to win by a comfortable margin. It was a very good performance and he showed how much talent he has when he puts in a fool proof display. HAMMERS MUSCLE (Muscle Hill – Zoia Boko Swe) stepped away quickly and was able to swoop across from out wide to find the lead. He enjoyed a good run in the leading role but couldn’t go with CMON CARL LEE in the latter stages. TWIXTEN was four back on the markers and moved to the outside with 300m remaining. He was doing his best work at the end and finished in third. ALDEBARAN POPPY was an unlucky fourth. She settled down seventh on the markers, moved away from the inside but didn’t really improve her position, angled back down to the inner again at the 1200m before making up a lot of ground over the concluding stages. BELLA LUCY trailed the leader and finished fifth ahead of VALLEY ESS JAY, which stepped away quickly from the handicap of 30m and settled in fifth position on the markers. BUDDY HINSON (Majestic Son – Dottie Hinson 2.3.5, $48,295) was six back on the markers and began yielding ground in the back straight. ABBIE (Majestic Son – Aldebaran Peggy) was slow to move and was last throughout, making an error in the back straight on the final occasion.

Trial 5: - HANOVER STARZZZ settled fourth on the markers, moved off the inside at the half mile marker, came out three horses wide at the 500m and quickly sprinted to the lead. She established a good margin on the home turn and was able to hang on at the finish. RUSSLEY RUSH settled seventh on the markers, moved into the running lane in the back straight on the final occasion (1-3) and sprinted home fast to pick up second. HOLSTEIN settled last and tried to track forward behind RUSSLEY RUSH but didn’t have the pace. He was able to get past the others however and ended up in third position. BIG BLUE (Modern Art – Rosetta Lombo) was behind the leader, moved away from the markers at the 600m and finished fourth. BINNO MAJOR (Art Major – Saved A Corka 1.59.1, $130,397) didn’t have much luck in fifth. He pushed forward early but was left without cover, snagged back to be five back on the markers, made a move in the back straight where he sprinted nicely up to third then peaked late. SHAKATIE (Bettors Delight – Shakali 2.0.9, $16,970) was six back on the markers before moving into the running lane at the 700m (1-2). She beat home CRYSTAL FLAME (Courage Under Fire – Crystal Reign 2.3.3, $33,714) (led) and SUMMERDAYS (Village Jolt – Catchthat 2.1.8, $22,165) (3 back markers).

Trial 6: - GOLDEN SUNSET (Skyvalley – Golden Wahine 2.2.2, $26,156) was a big winner of the last trial and is worth following. He galloped 150m after the start and lost approximately 40m. He tacked onto the group at the mile marker then sprinted quickly when asked to stride in the back straight on the final occasion. He dashed clear late and won with something in hand. STICK WITH ME trailed the leader, came to the outside on the home turn and held down second. VIOLETTA GIFT (Andover Hall – Shez Allrighty 2.2.4, $85,431) was four back on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 600m but couldn’t sprint with GOLDEN SUNSET at that point. She rallied in the final 100m and almost claimed second. THREE BROS (Dejarmbro – Right Yankee) attempted to lead all of the way but wanted to hang out badly from the 800m mark. He finished fourth in front of AHMARRA QUEEN (Great Success – Ahm Shere 2.7.0, $22,650), which was three back on the markers throughout. PATCHWORK was five back on the markers for the duration and beat home OHNO COMMANDO, which raced without cover and BOOZER (Bacardi Lindy – Jingling Silver 1.58.4, $191,322), which was tailed off after galloping at the start.

Trial 1: - WHIZZBANG DAN was very fractious at the start but when the tapes released, he stepped away well. He led early before taking a trail behind NORQUAY and waited for the sprint lane run. He accelerated through to defeat his stable mate ALDEBARAN JAYTEE, which moved away from the markers from last on the home turn. NORQUAY appeared to have her rivals covered. She led by two lengths into the home straight and was eased right down in the final 150m, going to the line under a vice like grip.

Trial 2: - REGALITY trailed the leader in the early stages and was last of the three at the bell. He was the only horse in the trial that did no work in the run and he brought fresh legs into the race with 400m remaining, dashing to the front late and drawing clear in the final 50m. WUNDERLAND produced a good effort in second position. He led clearly and raced very greenly when challenged at the winning post with a lap remaining, particularly when the bell rang. He took the trail, came to the outside with 300m to travel and raced greenly again in the straight to be beaten by three metres. He will continue to learn with the benefit of racing. MADAME TESS settled down last, made a surge from the 1200m and found the front with just under a lap remaining but couldn’t sustain the run late.

TRE COOL settled three back on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 300m and chased hard for a close second. TREASURE began quickly to find the top shortly after the start, enjoyed a nice run thereafter and was just run down on the line. ROCKABELLA STARZ was in fourth position for the duration and DEEKAYS DOLLAR was last of the five runners throughout, coming away from the markers with 500m to run but couldn’t make up the ground.

Trial 4: - ALDEBARAN YAHTZEE dropped back to be fourth on the markers early, moved away from the inside at the 1700m and quickly dashed around to find the lead leaving the back straight on the first occasion. She then rolled along at a very genuine tempo and was able to win clearly, despite getting a little tired over the concluding stages. ALDEBARAN MIDORI began quickly to lead, took a trail at the 1500m mark and tried hard for second with the pacer QUIETACHIEVER running in third after being four back on the markers for the first lap before getting around WILANKA (trailed leader, 3 back markers, 4 back markers), which was struggling to keep in touch with the hectic mid-race tempo. WILANKA beat home JAYBEEOHDEE, which galloped shortly after the start and lost all chance.
