David Miles will get a really good gauge on just how well one of his own charges stacks up when he takes on Australasia's most hyped pacer this evening.
Miles' in-form Louis Sedgwick has won his past three starts and, while he's not predicting an upset defeat of Ride High, he thinks the horse should relish the likely hot tempo in the Neatline Homes Pace at Shepparton.
The Monegeeta-based trainer believes a third placing is the best the son of Art Official can manage, with Ride High and Sirletic expected to fill the exacta placings.
"He does track speed awesome our little fella. He pulls quite hard and is actually a little rev-head," Miles said.
"Now he has actually found races where they are going faster, he's actually going better because he's not knocking himself around so much.
"They won't be walking here. I think it will be really interesting to see whether it can take him to a new level racing better horses again.
"His trackwork at home is really, really good. He has always been a great track worker, always worked better than what he's shown. But the last three months he's really started to mature and come into his own.
"Whether he goes to the next level or not we'll find out in the next four to six weeks because he's going to have to take on the big boys."
Miles has kept a close eye on the progress of Ride High right from the start of his career through a connection with that horse's mother All The Magic, who he used to train. All The Magic had just three appearances at the racetrack through 2010 and 2011 for a career-best third placing at Cranbourne.
"She was a little bit of a battler, but she had great bloodlines," Miles recalled.
"As is sometimes the case, they don't show it on the track but they breed on."
Young driver Jayden Barker has won his past two starts aboard Louis Sedgwick - both scintillating bursts from back in the field - and retains the drive this evening.
"He's been looking forward to it since I told him we were going to have a crack," Miles said.
"I'm rapt to have a horse that's good enough to take on a horse like this fella. I was quoted in the paper probably 12 months ago about who was the best horse in Australia and I said Ride High.
"I saw him trial at Melton one day and was just dumbfounded. I think he ran a half in 53 on the bit and I just thought wow that's as good of a horse I've seen in a long, long time."
