One of the most dominant two-year-old trotters in history is set to make his long-awaited return from injury next Tuesday at Tabcorp Park Melton.

Plymouth Chubb, who won four Group 1s and 14 of 15 starts in his first season at the races, has recovered from a serious leg issue and will step out for his first race since December 31 next week.

Trainer Peter Manning has nominated Plymouth Chubb for the heats of the Need For Speed Prince series, which culminates in a Group 1 final at Melton on September 2.

“He’s working his way down,” Manning said.

“He’s taken a while to get back, but he’s just starting to get back to his old self now.”

Plymouth Chubb galloped and was beaten in his very first start at the races last March, but went on to win the next 14 in succession.

Shortly after his Group 1 triumph in the Vicbred Super Series 2YO Trotting Colts and Geldings Final on New Year’s Eve, he suffered a fracture to a pastern bone that required surgery and a significant amount of rest and rehabilitation.

“He nearly had six months off and it had healed up, the vets (gave) him the all clear to start work and I brought him in. There’s been no sign of any lameness at all so we’re pressing on,” Manning said.

Plymouth Chubb's other Group 1 wins in 2021 included the Home Grown Classic, Redwood Classic and Breeders Crown Final, with his first-season earnings tallying over $220,000.
