There's a little extra bop in the step of many at Ballarat and District Trotting Club, where for more than a decade a large group of trots owners have cheered on their champs.

The group's most recent acquisition has started her career in style, with Betta Bopper making it three wins from five outings, including a tough success in the Del Re National Pace Final (2240m) at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.

The daughter of Betterthancheddar was under pressure a long way out from home but kept grinding and nabbed favourite Heaven In Locksley in the shadows of the post to score victory.

Trained by Emmett and Richard Brosnan, the horse has exceeded expectations according to Ballarat and District Trotting Club Standardbred Group manager Neil Stevens.

"She hadn't been tried as a youngster, she was basically let go and really only went into work in about September/October," Stevens said.

"The win at Ballarat (in November 2018) ... she came from stone motherless last and went past them. That made us sit up and take notice and think maybe we had one that went okay.

"She's had the two runs back and has handled them both very nicely."

Stevens said it was unfortunate the ownership group didn't acquire the horse as a youngster to chase the "bigger money races" but didn't reveal any grand plans with Betta Bopper.

"As a four-year-old mare, we basically just have to go through the classes," he said.

"We just don't know what potentially she could do. But one thing she has got, she has got a bit of bottom to her.

"We had a look at the replay (on Saturday night)... she was actually three-wide for 1200m of that. She was three-wide for the first 600m-700m and then she had to hook out again at about the 400m-500m mark..."

Stevens said the group had been a great social experience for those involved.

"We basically put $100 in each when we get (lease) a horse and that gives us a bank of about $8000," he said.

"At the most, we might put in another $100 every six or seven months if needed."

The success of leased horses such as Bit Of A Babe, who won 10 races, and Beach Garden, who has won nine times and will race again at Melton this Saturday night, has made it a "very cheap exercise".

"We call it a cup of coffee a week ... $4 a week. I don't think anyone has ever put in more than that over the last 13 or 14 years," Stevens said.

Last Saturday night's win was an emotional one for the group, who lost long-time member Bob Ingles recently at the age of 93.
