Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 1609m Mark Gurry & Associates Pace
1/8 I Am On Therun – Damian Wilson/Rodney Woods
A very tricky way to start the card. I AM ON THERUN draws the pegs, which is often the place to be around this track, and although he’ll need luck at some stage, his only career win has come here. He’s a consistent type and maps to get every chance.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 2 – 1609m Kruezy Trot
2/8 Kitty Cash – Michael Bellman/Michael Hughes
KITTY CASH has shown promise as a lightly raced 4YO when she brings her manners. Her placing at this track last start was solid against much stronger opposition than she meets here, and this looks a suitable race for her to break through.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 3 – 2080m Aldebaran Park Trot
3/3 Jilliby Dreamlover – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee
JILLIBY DREAMLOVER has been in elite form this preparation and everything points to her winning three in a row. She has excellent gate speed, should find the front, dictate terms, and prove too strong again. She’s a horse clearly going places.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.20
Race 4 – 2080m Decron Cranbourne Gold Cup 31 Jan Trotters FFA
4/4 Jilliby Ballerini – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee
You could almost copy and paste the comments from the previous race, but while the stablemate is progressive, JILLIBY BALLERINI has announced herself as one of the best trotting mares in the country. Despite being first-up since New Zealand, she has trialled strongly and looks set to lead and win.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.04
Race 5 – 1609m NZB Standardbred Pace
5/5 Smoken Ace – Kyle Marshall/Kyle Marshall
All signs point to SMOKEN ACE finding the lead here over the short trip, and if that eventuates, the times he can run will make him very hard to catch. He was a track-record winner two starts back and this circuit is right in his wheelhouse.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.50
Race 6 – 1609m Cranbourne Fencing Trot
6/1 Freight Shaker – Chris Svanosio/Chris Svanosio
FREIGHT SHAKER was able to win from this same draw over the longer trip last time out, but the map may be a little different here with speed drawn to his outside. If he can punch up early and find the leader’s back at worst, he’ll be in the finish.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.60
Race 7 – 2080m Woodlands Stud Pace
7/1 Cee Cee Lou – Jordan Leedham/David Harris
With key scratchings, CEE CEE LOU almost picks himself here, finally drawing a suitable gate to potentially hold the lead and dictate terms. He comes through the Vicbred Series and his subsequent runs have been good enough to win this.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.70
Race 8 – 1145m Hygain Summer Cash Splash Dash
8/2 Ubetta Knot – Scott Ewen/Scott Ewen
This is a pure hot-lap dash, and UBETTA KNOT looks well suited. She has the early speed to find the pegs and make her own luck from there, and she’s racing better than her numerical form suggests.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.50
