The best-bred horse in the Colin Redwood Memorial VSTA Trotters Final at Melton is also the fastest according to its trainer David Aiken.
Aiken puts the polish on Love Gun a son of leading stallion Love You and multiple Group 1 winning race mare Spidergirl.
“He is the quickest trotter in the race over 400 metres, so if he is anywhere near them, he should take a bit of beating,” Aiken said.
Love Gun is raced by prominent owner Dominic Martello, who purchased the horse off its breeder, Kevin Riseley, prior to the yearling sales.
“The first foal out of Spidergirl died so this bloke is the first of her progeny to get to the races,” he said.
Aiken believes immaturity was the reason Love Gun could only salute at one of his first 17 starts.
“He wouldn’t make a mistake at home but in a race he would do silly things and break for no reason, so we got him gelded and he’s been much better since,” he said.
Love Gun has won his past three starts including a heat win at his latest outing when he outclassed the opposition by 15 metres with plenty in reserve.
“We’ve always liked him and he works with (Group 1 winner) Aldebaran Crescent at home,” he said.
“We knew he had high speed when he rounded them up running a 28-second quarter winning at Maryborough as a two-year-old. He’s a metro class trotter down the track.”
Earlier in the night emerging juvenile Petracca should have little trouble accounting for his rivals in the IRT Australia Shakamaker Classic.
The Emma Stewart-trained youngster outclassed his rivals in the heat of the Bathurst Gold Crown before finishing a luckless third in the final behind Tardelli.
“Nothing went right in the final, we just struck too much traffic from the bad draw,” driver Nathan Jack said.
“He’s a good horse, he has as much high speed as any young horse I’ve driven.”
