Dont Care has been sidelined with a tendon issue, but his trainer Kate Hargreaves remains confident he’ll make a full recovery and be up in Queensland chasing Inter Dominion glory later in the year.
The Group 1 winner has not raced since finishing eighth in the Hammerhead Trotters Mile at Menangle on March 4.
Hargreaves said she was unsure how Dont Care injured his tendon, but believed running at speeds he’d never reached before and general wear and tear were possible contributors.
“He just had a bit of bruising on his tendon, but he’s all good now. He was always going for a break anyway,” Hargreaves said.
“I’ve tipped him out for a decent spell so he can fill out and become bigger and stronger.
“He only had a couple of starts in open company this season and it was pretty hard on him so a longer time on the green grass is what he needed.
“He’ll only get better with time so I’m happy to be patient with him.”
Hargreaves is setting her sights on the Inter Dominion Trotting Championship in Queensland and said the five-year-old was “still on track” for a trip north.
The ID23 series will begin with heats on December 1, 5 and 9 before the grand final on December 16.
Dont Care, the 2020 Australian 2YO Trotting Colt or Gelding of the Year, won five races from 11 starts last season, which closed with a runner-up placing in the Vicbred Super Series Final at Melton.
He then kicked off the new year with victory in the Group 3 Cobram Trotters Cup before tackling the big guns in the E B Cochran Trotters Cup, Great Southern Star series and Hammerhead Mile where he went around at big odds and was soundly beaten.
In total, the son of Used To Me has won 12 of 32 starts for prizemoney earnings up over $170,000.
