Ryan Phelan’s tips and betting strategy for Wedderburn Cup Day.
R1 – 1:14pm – The Locksmiths Store Bendigo Pace – 2150m
1 – Shonny Lou
9 – The Silent Assasin
2 – Eagle Major
7 – Alook To Like
Shonny Lou has had two runs since coming from New Zealand, both have had merit and now he drops back sharply in grade. He showed good gate speed in his most recent effort at Melton, so looks well placed from the inside draw to lead and take catching.
BACK: 1 Shonny Lou – 3 Units (win)
R2 – 1:42pm – Kirk Family Memorial Maiden Pace – 1750m
8 – Fulloffight
7 – Kalkadoon Dreaming
1 – Skadi
6 – Impeached
R3 – 2:17pm – ET & DM Stephenson Memorial Trot – 2150m
4 – Kalarney Prince
6 – Van Doren
3 – Zingara Lass
2 – Midnight Avenger
R4 – 2:59pm – Watson Paterson Memorial Pace – 1750m
5 – Aliza Hill
10 – Redbank Molly
4 – The Regulator
7 – Village Voice
Aliza Hill can be a little rocks and diamonds with her form, however the key to this mare is finding the lead over the short trip – which I think she does here. James Herbertson has a good strike rate with her and if the map plays in her favour can prove too speedy.
BACK: 5 Aliza Hill – 2 Units (win)
R5 – 3:39pm – Reeves Earthmoving Wedderburn Trotters Cup – 2955m
9 – Berriesandcherries
8 – Wish Upona Dream
2 – Argyle Rocks
7 – Kyvalley Heist
R6 – 4:20pm – Llowalong Farms Central Victorian Trotting Championship – 2150m
5 – Johns Boy
2 – Dances
4 – Night Whisperer
8 – Aldebaran Demi
R7 – 4:47pm – Loddon Shire Wedderburn Pacing Cup – 2555m
8 – Western Sonador
6 – Raging Whitebait
3 – Lincoln River
7 – Rakero Slammer
Western Sonador is a high-quality pacer who finds himself in a suitable Cup considering the quality of opposition he’s been opposed to recently. His past two efforts have been in top grade Bendigo and Shepparton Cups where he ran very well, and prior, won fresh up in the Gunbower Cup. If he can be handy enough a lap out, he can finish over the top of them.
BACK: 8 Western Sonador – 2 Units (win)
R8 – 5:29pm – Llowalong Farms Central Victorian Pacing Championship – 1750m
5 – Valiente
7 – Illustrious
11 – Pesci
10 – Cheerstolou
Valiente looks very well graded here dropping in class from the Maryborough Cup final. He can show good gate speed and with James Herbertson aboard you can expect an expert steer to get him into the right position and prove hard to catch at big odds.
BACK: 5 Valiente – 3 Units (win)

** A betting unit is typically a percentage of the total bankroll or the amount of money you are willing to risk on a particular bet – for example 1 unit is 10% of your bankroll, therefore with a $100 bankroll 1 unit equals $10.
