New races created to honour Victoria’s trotting greats

Members from Victorian trotting’s most prominent families and two star squaregaiters will be honoured during a special meeting at Tabcorp Park in September.

Racing at Melton on Friday, September 2 will feature an all-trotting card and include three brand new races to the calendar.

They are:

  • $30,000 Delvin Dancer 4YO Trotters Classic (Delvin Dancer won his first 15 race starts and was trained and driven by George Gath – pictured)
  • $30,000 Bob Conroy 2YO Trotters Classic
  • $30,000 Tornado Valley Trot Final (Tornado Valley won 39 races, more than $1million and was trained by George Gath’s grandson Andy)

The $24,000 The George Gath, for the open class trotters, has been shifted from Shepparton Cup night to the September 2 meeting.

“This was devised from the necessity to move the Need For Speed futurity series to a more appropriate time of the year given the change in the racing season,” Harness Racing Victoria General Manager Racing and Wagering Stephen Bell said.

“Three new races have been created to bolster the racing depth on this new program, joining the $60,000 Need For Speed Finals and the $12,000 Need For Speed Consolations.

“The concept was to honour two of the most prominent trotting families in Victoria, the Conroy family and the Gath family.”
