Rod and his Jett raring to go ahead of Tatlow Stakes assignment

Enjoying his best season with his boutique stable, veteran trainer Rod Carberry hopes the year reaches new heights this weekend.

Preparing a small team for “a very long time”, the hobby trainer will venture to Melton for Saturday night’s Tatlow Stakes.

Carberry has cut a regular path from his Haven property to the state’s premier track in recent weeks, but has been found wanting.

“I don’t race in town a lot, but have been going down there with Curyo Gentleman a few times of late,” Carberry said. “He’s had his last four starts there and has run two seconds and a third.

“With a touch more luck going his way, he can certainly win in town.”

This time around, however, Carberry will be represented by Kaiko Jett, which was an eye-catching winner in Horsham a fortnight ago upon debut.

Acknowledging the “pretty big step up in grade”, Carberry is confident the two-year-old will prove competitive from barrier four.

“She went super in her first run, I couldn’t have been more impressed with her,” Carberry said. “She does go well, but it’s a bit different going to town against some of the good ones.

“You can only beat what’s in front of you, which is what she did at her first start and I thought she was impressive doing it.

“I would have liked it if she drew one or two, but you get what you get and have to deal with it.

“As long as she gets a favourable run, I think she will prove her worth.”
