Greg Norman will relocate six horses from his racing stable to Charlton’s training facility, which club president Joey Thompson says will be a great boost for the central Victorian club.

The South Australian trainer, who’s on the cusp of 500 wins across a 35-year career, will set up in one of the three yards at Charlton’s training complex, which was officially opened in 2012.

“They have a nice little facility there and a nice little town, very central to the tracks in Victoria,” Norman said. “We might go there, give it a go and see what happens.”

Norman broke the news on RSN 927’s One Out One Back, which airs Thursday morning, and revealed the wheels would move quickly.

“I will start to move next weekend,” he said. “We need to do a couple of trips to get everything sorted but once we do and get settled in we will be up and running.

“I will be bringing six (horses) with me to start with, the bulk of the team stays here (in South Australia, where) we have a lot of young ones.”

Having Norman at the Back St Arnaud Rd facility is a terrific fillip for the club, says Mr Thompson.

“We are really happy to get a professional trainer into the facility,” he said. “The benefits will be many and varied. He’s a highly competitive trainer and will create more interest around the club, which has 500 members, and benefits to the town.”

The 12-hectare training facility has three complexes, each with eight day yards, fully-serviced sheds complete with lock-up harness, feed and wash areas, two internal boxes and abuts the club’s training track.

“It’s an excellent facility, including the track, which is open 24-7 because it’s not used for anything other than a training track,” Mr Thompson said. “The facility is still under-utilised by trainers and we are looking for more to set-up there.”

Norman’s arrival is only adding to the positivity at Charlton, which has been closed to allow for a $4.2 million sporting makeover that will soon be revealed.

“The complex is looking amazing and we get back to racing on September 29, have a new trainer in town and it’s onwards and upwards,” Thompson said.
