There's a 'Storm brewing as Lochinvar Art's little stablemates produced a couple of stunning runs at the Shepparton trials, with one earning a place in Craig Rail's special little black book.

Here's are Rail's observations from this week's Victorian trials, with his updated Blackbook at the bottom of the page.

SHEPPARTON 23/07/20

Trial 1: PARTYTIME (Majestic Son – Dizzyinterest 2.0.5, $33,367) began quickly and was able to find the lead, set up a slow tempo and was able to hold on to get the prize from HERES TO YOU JIMMY (Bacardi Lindy – Singing Creek 2.0.1, $59,178), which was third on the markers early before moving into the death seat with 600m remaining. COHEN ROAD KATE (Tennotrump – Court Strike 2.10.0, $1,268) settled four back on the markers and rolled into third ahead of HEEZ THE BUSINESS, which trailed the leader and broke stride on the home corner. BOOTLEG BERT slow to begin from his big handicap and was always over 60m behind the main group hence he came in at the tail of the field.

Trial 2: - LOCHINVAR CHIEF has already proven himself to be a classy customer this season having been runner up in the Sapling Stakes and in the Bathurst Gold Crown Final. He was impressive again at the trials as he strolled to an effortless victory. He settled down seventh on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 900m and gained a one out and one back trail in the back straight before hooking out three horses wide on the home turn. MACH HAMMER trailed the leader and was held up for a run at a vital stage before working home well for second. He was never going to beat the winner but it was a good effort and he seemingly had something left in reserve. EVIES DRESSMAKER settled fifth on the markers, moved up without cover at the 700m and hit the front on the home turn but couldn’t withstand the challenge of the first two horses. GRENADE (Major Bronski – Miss Emjay 2.3.8, $3,246) began quickly to find the lead but tired into a distant fourth late. MISS TYLER (Well Said – Fine Exception 1.59.9, $6,425) was fifth after racing keenly on the markers, beating home SMOOTH ROLLING (without cover, 3rd fence) and MISTER CRACKER (Cracker Black – For Joy) (6th fence, pulled hard, broke 600m).

BLACKBOOKER: - Lochinver Chief

Trial 3: - SUNS UP (Muscle Mass – Aldebaran Sunset) trailed the leader APPEARFROMNOWHERE (Majestic Son – Don’t Question This) at the start, came to the outside with 250m remaining and finished powerfully to win easily but in slow time. APPEARFROMNOWHERE held down second and FLYIN FIRST CLASS remained last of the three runners throughout. FLYIN FIRST CLASS came out four nights later and scored at Shepparton.

Trial 4: - PATSBEACHSTORM hasn’t raced since winning in fast time at Bendigo in March but he was just as impressive as his stable mate LOCHINVAR CHIEF, which won earlier in the night. The NSW Sapling Stakes place getter settled fifth on the markers, moved up without cover and quickly found the lead at the 1400m before jogging home to win by a big margin. MY GOLDEN EAGLE trailed the leader early before ending up being four back on the markers mid-race. He came away from the inside on the home turn and finished off well for a distant second. VILLANELLE began quickly but couldn’t lead, angled in for the trail and ended up being three back on the markers from the 1400m. She held down third in front of SHELBY GRACE, which was four and five back on the markers with ELECTRIC EYE (6 back markers) being in fifth. LILBITAHENRYTEE (7 back markers) and PRECIOUS TELL (Tell All – Precious Image 2.1.4, $35,643), which led early, took a trail at the 1400m and galloped with 700m remaining, were sixth and seventh respectively.

BLACKBOOKER: - Patsbeachstorm

Trial 5: - WESTERN SONADOR has recently returned from a New South Wales campaign, where third in the Regional Final at Wagga (Group 1), and has been trialling impressively. He settled sixth on the markers, sprinted quickly in the back straight and dashed clear at the finish to win by a comfortable margin. ALLMIGHTYJOELOUIS was four back on the markers early, moved into the one out and one back trail at the 600m and was able to work into a distant second with EXPRESS BEAUTY finishing third after having little luck. She trailed the leader, was inconvenienced and lost 15m before ducking back to the sprint lane over the final stages. SCOTLYNN BEACH finished fourth after showing gate speed to lead and knocking up late. RAMBLENROLLER raced without cover, was restrained to fifth on the markers and came out three horses wide from the 600m mark. He finished fifth from BE MY BABY, which broke stride at the start and lost approximately 40m before tacking on at the 1500m mark. ALICIA KEYS dropped out to last after settling three back on the markers in the early stages of the event.

Trial 6: - FOREST FORCE trailed the leader early, was shuffled to three back on the markers and moved away from the pegs on the home turn when he dashed home to defeat TROUBLE LOOMING, which came out three horses wide from four back on the markers. NIKKI JO showed gate speed to lead, took a trail and used the sprint lane to finish in third position with CHANGEOVER GIRL (Changeover – Shortys Treasure 1.58.8, $24,110) dropping back to fourth after pushing forward from the death seat to find the lead with a mile remaining. JUSTBLINGIT CRESCO (1-2,1-1, without cover from 400m) came in fifth ahead of SPEED DATING (4 back fence, 4 wide turn) and LONESTAR LASS (Lonestar Legend – My Lady Best CA $115,490) (last fence, raced roughly at 500m) came in seventh. RAMBLEON sat without cover, gained a one out and one back trail at the 1800m, was without cover again at the mile marker and dropped off from the 400m, finishing last of the eight runners.

Trial 7: - CRESCO GOLDIGGER gained a one out and one back trail, came to the outside in the straight and proved too strong in a close finish to claim the final trial on the program. AMALFI COAST was fourth on the markers, moved up without cover at the 1500m, raced keenly and finished in second position with BELLA MYSTIQUE being third. She led out, took a trail and was shuffled back to third on the markers before making ground along the sprint lane in the final stages. MY MATE COL (Rock N Roll Heaven – Nightn Georgia 2.0.4, $116,605) was without cover early, pushed forward to lead at the 1400m, took a trail shortly afterwards and moved away from the pegs on the home turn. He finished fourth ahead of the trotter ITSARAPT, which pulled hard throughout, pressed forward to lead at the 1300m and boxed on well at the finish. CRYSTAL FLAME (Courage Under Fire – Crystal Reign 2.3.3, $33,714) settled fifth on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 600m (1-2) and finished sixth ahead of WONGA LAKE (3+4 back markers) with ART FINEST racing roughly in last position throughout the entire trial.

TERANG 25/07/20

Trial 1: - CRACKER HAZEL (Cracker Black – Acrossyourheart) is a Matthew Craven trained 3yo, which is by the pacing bred Courage Under Fire sired stallion Cracker Black (1.53.7, $86,919) out of a maiden mare by Mach Three called Acrossyourheart, which both ended up in the care of New South Wales based trainer Kevin Pizzuto. She took out the opening trial by a large margin over JIMMY BINTANG (Allawart Ray – Cathrins Image), which has had numerous trials leading up to his debut with LOVE TO DASH (Love You – Kyvalley Aldebaran) being in third position. MAORI AMOUR and THE BONT (Armbro Variable – Smokey Robyn) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Trial 2: - GOODTIME HEAVEN won the Breeders Crown Final and finished second in the New South Wales Breeders Challenge last season so she is a quality mare. She hasn’t started since April but she was able to run home in a quick final half and just get the better of BIG GUN JOHNNY in a field of only two competitors.

Mile Rate: - 2.4.2            Final Half: - 56.9               Margin: Neck

Trial 3: - KEAYANG NINJA (Wishing Stone – Another Clare 2.2.0, $48,902) is a Paddy Lee trained juvenile trotter, which beat her older rivals. He is out of a fine trotting mare in Another Clare and obviously has ability. The former pacer QUEEN OF CRIME finished in second with KING JEWELIEN (Angus Hall – Black Curlew 2.7.3, $7,805) finishing a distant third.

Trial 4: - WEMAN MACHA (Western Terror – Machabella 2.1.4, $5,075) is a Courtney Slater trained 2yo, which was able to defeat LAMANDIER (Somebeachsomewhere – Champagne Dreams 1.55.6, $60,917) by a narrow margin. MISTER UPTOWN was stood down to trial after galloping first up at Stawell and finished third in front of ROCKINTHECITY (A Rocknroll Dance – Final Patrol 2.2.7, $5,862). KING JAMES (Art Major – Rhodium Castle 1.57.7, $89,165) is a close relation to the smart performer Micrometeor, being out of the former handy race mare Rhodium Castle. He was in fifth position ahead of MAGIC MASTERPIECE (Artspeak – Lady Blanchett) and MY WATERLOU (Sweet Lou – Sokin Wet 1.59.7, $28,748), a close relation to the smart performer Itmademyday, came in at the rear of the field.

Trial 5: - TIP TOP EURASIAN is a newcomer to the Paddy Lee stable and hasn’t raced since an unplaced effort at Bendigo in May. He was able to win his trial comfortably over CELTIC CASH with KAYLASISTER running in last of the three runners.

Mile Rate: - 2.7.5            Final Half: - 60.2               Margins: - 10m, 20m

Trial 6: - JILLIBY GILMORE was placed in the Gold Bracelet at Terang in December and hasn’t raced since a fourth in the Silver Vase at the beginning of the year. He was able to get up and defeat PROBLEM MAKER with SHOWEM SHIFTY being in third position. The lightly raced mare SHEZAROCKNROLLIN finished at the tail of the field.

Trial 7: - LEICA BUDDY is a lightly raced pacer with ability having been placed in all of his four starts to date. He recorded successive victories in February/ March 2019 and hasn’t been to the races since. He was able to win his trial by a narrow margin over ROLLINJACKSRAINBOW, which is another handy type that has ability but hasn’t raced for some time. THE BIG SHOW finished a distant third ahead of DOWLING.

BACCHUS MARSH 25/07/20

Trial 1: - SCRUFFY DOOLAN is a strong trotter that was racing at a high level when he was last in work. He was able to take out the opening trial by a narrow margin over the former New Zealander FULL NOISE, which scored at Ascot Park (Invercargill) last outing. He has always shown a lot of potential and joins trainer Chris Lang so he should perform well in Australia. MADENA SKY was last of the three runners to cross the line.

Mile Rate: - 2.3.6            Final Half: - 59.5               Margins: - Head, 8m

Trial 2: - MOREFLINGTHANBLING is a maiden from six starts but has shown some potential having been placed on three occasions. He defeated the juvenile trotter THAT’S NOT MY GAIT (Follow The Stars – Forever Happy 2.1.7, $3,535), which is bred to pace so could be aptly named. She obviously produced a nice trial performance with the mile rate being a handy 2.5.9. FLOATING MOUNTAIN finished in third position ahead of ALDEBARAN MAVERICK (Andover Hall – Maori Road), which was also a juvenile taking on older horses.

Trial 3: - TUPPENCE met strong opposition at his first two attempts and performed nicely. He ran home in a quick final half to take out the trial comfortably so he is worth following. COLERNE (Somebeachsomewhere – Trojan Fire) is a Craig Demmler prepared filly, which filled second position with NARUTAC PRINCE (Art Major – O Narutac Bella USA $154,536) being in third. CONFESSION (Tell All – Viva Courage 2.0.1, $19,375) finished last of the four runners and was beaten approximately thirty metres from the winner.

Mile Rate: - 2.3.7            Final Half: - 58.2               Margins: - 10m, 6m

Trial 4: - It was a good battle between the Geoff Webster prepared runners MAJESTIC CRUISER and KASBAH KID with little separating the pair when the judge called a halt. MAJESTIC CRUISER scored by a narrow margin but the mile rate and sectional times were fast so both horses obviously performed nicely. CORRINYAH CONMAN finished forty metres away in third position.

Mile Rate: - 2.0.4            Final Half: - 57.6               Margins: - ½ Head, 40m

Trial 5: - ILLAWONG KISMET was stood down to trial after dropping right out at Ballarat on July 18. She was able to record reasonable time to get her preparation back on track and defeated BURNFOURU with MISTER GLEE finishing third. IOWA HANOVER hasn’t raced for over a year and finished in fourth position.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.3            Final Half: - 58.3               Margins: - 2m, 5m

MARYBOROUGH 26/07/20

Trial 1: - BETTOR MY DREAMZ continues to trial very nicely and was the most loosely assessed runner in the field but was still able to land the prize after leading for the majority of the journey. ITSALLBOUTJACK began quickly to lead, took a trail at the 1700m and tried to chase down the winner in the straight. He made up ground and just failed on the line. BETTOR BE THE BOMB settled four back on the markers, pushed through behind the winner in the straight and was going across the line with plenty in reserve, never being fully extended at any stage. RAANI settled third on the markers and moved up without cover from the 600m. She finished ahead of KINGOFTHESTARS, which was last on the markers for the majority of the trial.

Trial 2: - WHOS THE MAN has already tasted success this season having had a victory and four placed efforts from his five starts to date. He settled down last of the three runners, moved away from the inside with 600m remaining and finished on best to win over HOTEL KYVALLEY, which set the speed. HI HO KYVALLEY was last of the three runners to cross the line after trailing the leader throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.8.2            Final Half: - 60.8               Margins: - 5m, 5m

Trial 3: - FOREVER AND A DAY scored nicely after settling down in fourth position, gaining a one out and one back trail at the 800m and being left without cover from the 600m. He went to the line without being fully extended and was able to safely hold off GOTTAHAVEAHOBBIE, which was being pushed out late. GOTTAHAVEHOBBIE was fifth on the inside and followed FOREVER AND A DAY away from the markers at the half mile marker. JIMMY COME HOLME was third on the markers and came away from the inside at the 800m but was able to duck in behind the leader shortly afterwards. He was held up for a run at a vital stage on the home turn and worked into third position late. KEMPSEYS DELIGHT began quickly to lead, ran along at a genuine tempo mid-race and tired into fourth late. WESTERN BOUNDARY trailed the leader throughout and started to yield ground in the back straight on the final occasion.

Trial 4: - OUR KINGS LANDING began very quickly to lead, backed off the tempo mid-race and had a good kick left at the finish. He was able to defeat NORQUAY, which trailed the leader throughout with ANYWHERE HUGO moving up without cover from last at the 900m to snare third position. DADDYWHO was the only pacer in the trial and took on the open class trotters. He finished last after being three back on the markers throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.4.2            Final Half: - 58.3               Margins: - 3m, 4m

Trial 5: - BELLMAC BAMBI led out, took a trail at the 1700m and moved away from the markers on the home turn. She sprinted home best to defeat SAVVY KYVALLEY (Andover Hall – Aldebaran Dream 2.3.4, $53,200), which settled down third on the markers and continued to use inside runs before ducking back into the sprint lane over the final stages. RAGNA THOR trailed the leader early but the pace was extremely slow and she darted around to find the lead at the 1700m. She finished third with SMART CHA CHA (Feng Shuis Image – McKillop 2.5.7, $7,395) being last of the four runners throughout.

Trial 6: - HARRY HOO settled four back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail and came out three horses wide at the 300m mark. He sprinted home strongly to win nicely over HAMMERS HELLPATROL (Somebeachsomewhere – Dreams of Heaven 1.58.9, $150,444), which settled in third position before moving up without cover from the 800m. YAPPER (Tell All – Slap On A Hat 1.57.3, $46,178) trailed the leader before finding the lead at the 1700m. He was able to hold down third position in front of VAPAR FIRE (Art Major – Arctic Fire 1.51.6, $357,872), which led out then took a trail. STAR PUPIL was fifth on the markers before trailing forward in the final lap (1-2, 3-1). He beat home WELEASE WODGER (Barna Straide – Seven Nations 1.59.5, $63,000), which was last most of the way and had a tendency to hang out in the run.

Trial 7: - NAI HARN BAY has been performing quite nicely at the trials and was able to lead throughout to win comfortably in reasonable time. SUMMERHILL (Peak – Summerline 2.1.9, $74,544) was third on the markers before moving up without cover at the 800m mark. He finished in second position with ANNALISE (Mach Three – Art De Triomphe 1.58.8, $11,598) being third after gaining a nice trail throughout (5th fence, 1-1 at 800m). SMILES TELL ITALL (Tell All – Smiling Success 2.1.8, $3,075) settled seventh on the markers, moved into a trailing position (1-2 at 800m) and ran home fairly well out wide on the track. LORIMERLAGG raced roughly at the start and trailed the leader. She finished fifth in front of MARLA (Angus Hall – Monica My Dear 2.0.2, $60,416) (4 back markers) and DICKIE MACRAY was sixth on the markers for the majority of the trial.

Mile Rate: - 2.1.8            Final Half: - 57.5               Margins: - 7m, 5m

Trial 8: - ME PAT MALONE trailed the leader and moved away from the markers with 500m remaining. He hit the front on the home turn and finished off strongly at the end. VINCENT KAI ran an eye-catching second. He settled fifth on the markers and was still last on the home turn before producing a big finish late. ANGSKI settled third on the markers and finished third ahead of BACARDI CHARDY, which pulled hard in the lead. KYVALLEY CATWALK settled four back on the markers and ended up coming in at the tail of the field.

BLACKBOOKER: - Vincent Kai

Trial 9: - GHANASUYA trailed the leader and pulled hard in the run. He produced a good finish once he came away from the markers and scored by a large margin. BE A GOOD SCOUT tried to lead throughout and finished in second position just in front of SURREALIST, which did finish on well out wide on the track from last of the four runners. MISS MORAINE settled three back on the markers and saw the field to be safely home.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.4            Final Half: - 57.8               Margins: - 20m, Short Head

Trial 10: - KYVALLEY SHAUNIE settled three back on the markers, moved around the field to find the lead at the 1700m and still had plenty of petrol left in the tank at the end when he won softly over PINEVALE VICTORIA, which led out, took a trail and came to the outside on the home turn. SAY YOUR PRES was four back on the markers early, moved to three back on the markers from the 1500m, raced keenly, moved through to trail KYVALLEY SHAUNIE on the home turn and never peeled off his back in the straight, finishing under a hard hold in third position. ALDEBARAN WILLO settled fifth on the markers, got a long way out of his ground and finished hard for an eye-catching fourth in what should be a strong form event. KEPT TOO LONG (Union Guy – Kept At Bey) is unraced and was taking on the winners of multiple events so there was no surprise to see him dropping out at the end. He trailed the leader before losing his position to end up four back on the markers mid-race.

BLACKBOOKER: - Aldebaran Willo

BALLARAT 29/07/20

Trial 1: - STRAZEELE bounced to a lead of approximately 15m from the standing start and held a good advantage of his rivals for the majority of the journey. He led throughout to defeat the handy trotter KEAYANG MAJESTIC, which was allowed to stroll around in second position throughout without being fully extended. RAGNA THOR was backing up from her Maryborough trial effort on Sunday and was last of the three runners throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.5.8            Final Half: - 60.3               Margins: - 15m, 12m

Trial 2: - FORGOT TO REMEMBER was able to progress forward to find the lead without having to apply too much pressure going into the first corner. She set up a slow speed and was able to win comfortably in the run to the judge. IM READY JET settled last of the three runners and finished off solidly without being asked for a full effort. BACARDI CHARDY trailed the leader, came away from the markers at the 400m mark but broke stride shortly afterwards and came in last of the three runners.

Mile Rate: - 2.7.5            Final Half: - 59.7               Margins: - 7m, 15m

Trial 3: - IMAMAORIJET showed good gate speed to lead from the outside of the front line and finished off in a reasonable last quarter of 29.2 seconds to win softly. KEAYANG XENA had no clear run after trailing the leader throughout and looked to had something left in reserve at the finish. KEAYANG NINJA (Wishing Stone – Another Clare 2.2.0, $48,902) was a close up third after settling three back on the markers and moving into the breeze at the 500m. HOPEFUL BEAUTY (Brilliantissime – Beauty Life FRA) was last of the four runners throughout.

BLACKBOOKER: - Keayang Xena

Trial 4: - The champion trotting mare DANCE CRAZE returned in style after she settled three back on the markers and charged through the middle in the final 100m to win clearly. DIAMOND CULLEN was sixth on the markers early then improved to fifth and came out four horses wide on the home turn. She finished off strongly to run in second position with OXS ART MAJOR being in third after trailing the leader and coming to the outside at the 500m. The early leader ROCKNROLL CRUISER finished fourth ahead of GLAMOUR RAINBOW (Art Major – Hay Sharon 1.58.3) (5th markers then 4th markers) with LEBOWSKI running last after settling in fourth and yielding ground from the bell.

TABCORP PARK, MELTON 30/07/20

Trial 1: - LONG WEEKEND began quickly but took a trail behind IAN RAYMOND shortly after the start. He came to the outside at the 600m mark and went stride for stride with the leader until forging to the lead in the home straight. He then held off the late challenge of BANKROLL to get the prize. BANKROLL settled in third position and moved into the one out and one back trail approaching the home turn. He came out three horses wide turning into the front straight and just failed to gun down the winner. TARGARYEN HANOVER was last of the four runners throughout.

Mile Rate: - 1.56.1          Final Half: - 57.06    Margins: - Short ½ head, 2m

Trial 2: - ORLANDOS PRINCESS pushed to the lead shortly after the start and ran along at a genuine tempo. PHARISEE trailed ORLANDOS PRINCESS until coming to the outside at the quarter pole. He sprinted quickly in the final stages and drew well clear to win by nearly twenty metres with ORLANDOS PRINCESS finishing second, well ahead of the other pair. AUNTIE POPPY settled down last of the four runners, moved around MAJESTICAL BELLE at the 800m and tried to chase down the leaders but peaked late, finishing a distant third. MAJESTICAL BELLE was a 3yo trotter taking on metropolitan style horses and yielded ground from the half mile marker.

Mile Rate: - 1.58.6          Final Half: - 58.29    Margins: - 19m, 16.5m

Trial 3: - AUSTRALIANA is a former New South Wales pacer, which is now with trainer Lance Justice. She hasn’t raced since being unplaced in the Bathurst Gold Tiara in March but she won her trial by leading out then taking a trail at the 1200m mark. MISTER MACEDON (Betterthancheddar – Black And Yellow 1.59.4, $19,288) raced without cover early before progressing forward to find the lead. He battled on well in the straight and was beaten by a narrow margin. YEAH MATE began quickly but took cover behind AUSTRALIANA and was relegated to third at the 1200m. He moved up without cover with 700m remaining and tried hard in the straight. JIMMY HAMBONE raced keenly four back on the markers and looked to be travelling well on the home turn. He wasn’t beaten by far but ended up in fourth position ahead of BEAU HART, which settled down last and moved into the one out and one back trail behind YEAH MATE in the last lap.

Trial 4: - Only two runners contested the standing start trial for the trotters with ABITOFADREAMER bouncing to the front early ahead of BILL DISPUTE. BILL DISPUTE moved to the outside at the 600m mark and joined ABITOFADREAMER. It was a good battle down the straight but BILL DISPUTE was able to prevail by a narrow margin.
