Kyal Costello has only had the one drive behind Andrew Vozlic-trained Boss Major, but it was a promising enough performance for him to declare the horse his best of seven chances on tonight's bumper Mildura card.
The young reinsman has been making regular trips to the Sunraysia region in recent weeks and has enjoyed some good success with a double at the most recent meeting on November 3.
He drove former Michael Stanley pacer Wilshire Boulevard to victory for new trainer Scott Garraway as well as two-year-old gelding All The Fours for Freddy Taiba, who he works for on a full-time basis in Sunbury.
During that meeting, Boss Major worked hard and finished a head second to Rubbers Dilemma, who had the softer pegs run and charged home out wide to grab him in the shadows of the post.
Tonight, Costello is hoping for a change of fortune with the well-travelled four-year-old, who is looking to score his first win for Vozlic in the Tenderprint Australia Pace (1790m).
"His run last week was pretty good, he just didn't have a lot of luck when he got stuck three-wide for a little bit around the first lap," Costello said.
"He comes out of (barrier) eight tonight and the two (Itzexceptional) should probably lead and we might be able to find the front depending what else comes out."
Boss Major was trained by Paul and Maree Campbell early in his career and then spent time in Tasmania with Rohan Hillier before shifting back across to Victoria, where he joined the Chris Svanosio yard. Vozlic has had the son of Art Major for his past five starts and his record now stands at five wins and 14 placings from 43 trips to the races.
Costello has a solid book of drives across the 11-race card this evening, including Wilshire Boulevard who goes in search of three-straight triumphs in the feature of the night, the $20,000 Tasco Petroleum Pace (1790m). There he will meet Bernie Winkle, who has strung together 12 wins from his last 16 Mildura starts.
COSTELLO ON HIS OTHER CHANCES TONIGHT:
RACE 1: THE EUSTON CLUB 2YO & 3YO PACE
PENNIES FOLLOWING (trained by Andrew Vozlic)
"He's racing okay and it's not much of a field so should be thereabouts."
RACE 2: THE GATEWAY 3YO PACE
MISS TWINKLE (trained by Scott Garraway)
"Her last start was pretty average and she's probably going to have to improve a little bit."
RACE 3: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY 2YO & 3YO PACE
OLLIES MOLLY (trained by Andrew Vozlic)
"She's going good. Her last few starts have been pretty good so I'm tipping we won't be too far away."
RACE 5: SUNRAYSIA SECURITY PACE
KING SOLOMON (trained by Andrew Vozlic)
"His last start ... he hit the line really good. I was happy with it. If he gets the right run he certainly won't be far away."
RACE 8: TASCO PETROLEUM PACE
WILSHIRE BOULEVARD (trained by Scott Garraway)
"His last few starts have been pretty good, but it's a big step up in grade, so he's going to have to have it pretty easy in front for him to be competitive with the top class ones."
RACE 10: WEIGHTMAN'S PACKAGING & STATIONERY PACE
HILLDALE SUNRISE (trained by Andrew Vozlic)
"He's racing well. He won't be too far away either."
