Trots Centre: Theultimate talent ready to burn tonight

Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Its Beaujolais and Victoria Oaks fourth placegetter Its Ebonynivory have both been eye-catching three-year-olds for John Yeomans this season, but the Doreen trainer and breeder says he may have one better.

And she steps out at 7.39pm tonight on Trots Vision in the Mark Gurry & Associates 3YO Pace at Cranbourne.

Theultimate, an Art Major filly out of Ultimate Art’s ($621,996) dam Salix, will be favoured to produce win number three in start number six tonight.

“She missed most of her two-year-old career. We had a virus go through the place and just couldn’t shake it,” Yeomans said. “She came on late, had a couple of starts and fortunately won the consolation of the Breeders Crown. She’s pretty tough and very strong.”

She showed those traits in the Breeders Crown win, with Theultimate making a prolonged three-wide advance to win by a neck on the line.

Eight months on she had her next start on April 8, winning at Kilmore after sustaining pressure throughout and then holding off favourite Celestia’s late attack.

“She got pressured the whole way, but it was a good tough win and she has probably benefitted from it,” Yeomans said. “She’s just developing now. We’ve got a lot of hope for her.”

In fact, he thinks so highly of her when asked how she shaped up against stablemates Its Beaujolais and Its Ebonynivory, Yeomans response was revealing.

“She beats them all at home. She’s very good. Its Beaujolais probably finishes third out of the three of them. Its Ebonynivory is a really smart filly. She’s got a lot of ability.”

And so, heading it tonight, he said “we’re reasonably confident”.

Of the stablemates, Its Ebonynivory is spelling after brushing a knee in her New South Wales Oaks heat and Its Beaujolais after suffering a virus, with both put on ice ahead of the return of elite age group racing. And it’s likely they’ll have Theultimate to contend with.

“We have had about 12 Group 1 winner. That’s the aim, to win Oaks, Vicbreds, Queen Of The Pacifics – that’s what keeps us in industry.”
