Wharton: Captain Ahab to stand at stud in Victoria

The Captaintreacherous horse Captain Ahab, who was first at stud in North America before being exported to Western Australia, will stand his first season in Victoria this spring.

The upstanding young stallion has been purchased by prominent south-western Victorian breeders Steve and Chelsea Dickson, both members of the Harness Breeders Victoria commitee.

Captain Ahab will stand at Golden Plains Equine, Lethbridge at a service fee of $2,000 including GST.

“We are really excited about the arrival of Captain Ahab. He is a stunning individual and will provide breeders with an opportunity to breed their mares to only the second Captaintreacherous stallion standing in Victoria,” Steve said.

“Captain Ahab offers an exceptional lineage at a unique price point, with further discounts available for multiple bookings.”

Captain Ahab was a smart racehorse in his own right, racing on 11 occasions as a two-year-old (including qualifiers) for nine straight wins. He commenced his career winning two legs of the Kindergarten Classic at The Meadowlands in 1:51.4 (last 400 in 25.4) and 1:52.8.

He later won a heat and the final of the Dream Maker Classic at Woodbine Mohawk Park in 1:51.4 and 1:52.8 and the $70,000 Nassagaweya Stake in 1:51.8.

Captain Ahab twice defeated the 2018 USA 2YO Colt of the Year Captain Crunch, firstly in the $53,000 Champlain Stake in 1:52.6 and an elimination of the $680,000 Metro Pace, in which he took his lifetime mark of 1:50.8.

In all, he paced seven winning miles from 1:50.8 to 1:52.6 and was race-timed in 1:49.2.

Captain Ahab has made a promising start to his ‘down under’ stud career. In his first season, he left 30 foals, and of these he had 17 to the races half way through their three-year-old season for five winners and six placegetters.

From his first crop he sired the smart fillies Chef’s Kiss, a double winner at Gloucester Park and a placegetter in the $100,000 APG Sales Classic, the Gloucester Park winners El Rae’s Girl and Spot On Molly and Southerner (3 wins this season).

Apart from being by Captaintreacherous, and one of his first crop, Captain Ahab is out of the Western Ideal mare Acquavella, a sister to the Metro Pace winner, USA 2YO Colt of the Year and successful sire Artspeak 1:47.4 ($1.6 million).

Captain Ahab is a Direct Scooter line horse – that which produced Somebeachsomewhere – and carries a 3×3 cross to Artsplace and a 4×4 cross to Matt’s Scooter.

He should prove an ideal outcross to mares boasting the blood of Cam Fella, Western Hanover, Falcon Seelster and others.
