Boncel back home with Duffy and nearing a return

Boncel Benjamin is back in the care of owner Steve Duffy and all roads lead to an Inter Dominion title defence later this year.

The ID21 champion, who won the race in the Menangle steward’s room after a historic protest hearing, has recovered from a third tendon issue and is being prepared for a return to the races.

The seven-year-old joined Jason Grimson’s New South Wales stables in September last year before winning harness racing’s most prestigious race in December.

He was then set for a tilt at the Miracle Mile, but was sidelined in February when injury struck.

The son of Grinfromeartoear is now back being trained in Shepparton by Duffy, who said the horse was on track for a return to the races in the coming weeks.

“He’s been home and done probably three or four months rehabilitation,” Duffy told TrotsLife.

“He had a couple of trials about a month ago when he was a bit underdone. He’ll have a couple now in the next couple of weeks and we will just take it from there.

“We are hoping to be racing in late July type thing.”

Boncel Benjamin has won 17 races from 83 career starts for over $470,000 in prizemoney.
