Kate targeting Queensland features with in-form mare

Kate Hargreaves is setting Ludacrous for a raid on the Queensland winter carnival.

The Shelbourne trainer has been thrilled with the recent form of her mare, who has won three of five starts as a four-year-old in 2024.

Ludacrous’ last outing was arguably her best of the season, with a close-up death-seating fourth to champion rival Ladies In Red at Melton on May 18.

Hargreaves said the daughter of Art Major had been given a little freshen-up following that performance and would have “a trial and two or three runs” before heading north to Albion Park for the Group 3 Fleur De Lil Stakes on July 13 and the Group 1 Golden Girl a week later.

“I’ve had this in mind since late last season,” Hargreaves said. “I was confident she’d be right up there with the best as an open age mare.

“I nominated her for the Robin Dundee at Menangle to qualify for the Queen Elizabeth last month but they gave her second emergency, so hopefully her form is good enough now to warrant a start in Queensland.”

Ludacrous has won six of 28 career starts for prizemoney earnings up over $120,000.

Mission accomplished.

The decision to swing more major races on to Victoria Cup night and make it an extravaganza has worked, even three weeks before it plays out.

Trainer Joe Pace and his son Adrian toasted two milestone achievements after their pacer Justalittlesip scored an upset win in the Lifestyle Communities Free For All at Melton on Saturday night.
