The ceilings high and the floor will soon present itself for team Aiken at Tabcorp Park tonight, with the stable taking a talented team to headquarters optimistic if things go there way a winning haul will follow.
While talented Bettor Be Sorry was scratched yesterday, the stable still has plenty of talent in the float for the trip south with Aldebaran Crescent, Sirletic and Letsrockletsroll.
Josh Aiken joined Jason Bonnington and Nikkita Ross on Trots Life yesterday as part of the Friday form panel to talk through his chances, beginning with Aldebaran Crescent, who’ll be chasing further success in the Group 2 IRT Australia Matriarch Trot.
“(Trainer David Aiken’s) more patient than me,” Josh told Trots Life. “I had her in the breeding barn and he said give her another season and she’s just jumped out of the ground.
“We were scratching our head early days, she’s just a late maturer and now away she’s gone.”
The five-year-old Majestic Son mare out of Maori Road, who’s a half-sister to Sumethingaboutmaori ($461,499), has nine career wins heading into tonight, six of which have come in her 15 starts since June 8.
She’ll attack tonight’s $30,000 four and five-year-old mares feature from gate 10, between likely types Keayang Livana and Monaro Maro.
“If I can find the helmet of one of those better horses on the back line and track them into the race, she’s got that turn of foot where she can be pretty dangerous off speed,” Josh said. “She only needs a couple of things to go her way and she will be right in that race.”
Aiken’s focus will then turn to DNR Logistics The Gammalite, with Sirletic likely to launch from gate four favourite for the $24,000 race, which streams at 8.50pm on Trots Vision.
“We’ve been pretty happy with him, he had a long time off and won a few races during regional racing,” Josh said.
“He was a bit stiff, he came across Lochinvar Art and Ride High as we all merged together. I am probably still working him out as a horse to drive, I think I’ve over driven him a couple of times. He’s just got that electric speed.
“In a field like this, which seems a bit of a drop back for him, if he can settle for me I think he will take some beating.”
He then rounds his night out with Letsrockletsroll in the second heat of the Gordon Rothacker Memorial Championship.
Having won his first two races for David Aiken when he joined the Avenel camp this winter, Letsrockletsroll’s gone close several times since without being able to replicate that success.
“He’s a really quick horse,” Josh said. “He can rattle off a low 26 quarter on his night.
“What we’ve seen with the Rocknroll Heavens that we’ve trained, there is often a couple of versions of them – sometimes they are freakishly brilliant, sometimes they don’t turn up. I think the key with him is if we race him every fortnight he’ll race pretty slippery.
“If he can behind the leader or three pegs, he’s just got that dangerous turn of foot. In saying that, if he doesn’t turn up he can run a pretty average fourth or fifth, but hopefully we’ve got him right.”
