Faye McEwan says her latest project, Partytime, has “more tricks than a magician’s bag”, but she’s hopeful the four-year-old can pull a rabbit out of the hat when he steps out at Swan Hill tonight.
The Laser Electrical Swan Hill Trotters Handicap is the four-year-old’s second start and McEwan has her fingers crossed the well-bred gelding can make his mark at 8.12pm.
“He’s shown lots of ability, he just has a few tricks,” McEwan said. “He can certainly trot, but he can also run up the track or run down the track.”
A Pearl Kelly Award winner in 2016, which celebrated her long and distinguished training career, McEwan united some friends in May to purchase the Majestic Son gelding off breeder Sheron Park.
“He had been out in a paddock a long time,” McEwan said. “He had a few issues as far as mentally being able to cope with the work.
“We were able to secure him at a reasonable price and so we thought we’d have a go.”
The syndicate of six “are close friends”, including Genevieve and Leo Curtin who “I met on an Inter Dominion trip six years ago”.
“They’ll be watching from Christchurch,” McEwan said. “Sybil Lewis has been a lifelong friend. Kevin Inglis has my horses stabled at his property in Torumbarry and Dennis Upton is a client of more than 20 years.”
And she’s hopeful she can reward their faith at Swan Hill tonight, though there is some trepidation after Partytime disappointed on debut at Geelong when he miss-stepped from the gate.
“He galloped three times and just doesn’t make mistakes,” McEwan said. “He’s had a few trials and he’s done perfectly.”
She’s optimistic tonight’s standing start will better suit him.
“I think he’ll step away. He has never missed getting away yet,” she said. “He’s not super fast away, but goes pretty safely.
“It’s not a bad field all the same. If he just behaves himself and gets a bit of confidence up I’ll be happy.”
